POLLEN ANALYSIS OF STRATIGRAPHIC COLUMNS AND FEATURES AT SITE 48PA175, PARK COUNTY, WYOMING

Site 48PA175 included evidence of a probable semi-subterranean structure
that included two probable hearths, as well as scattered areas of lithics and
fire-cracked rock, additional hearths, stone circles, rock alignments, and purple
glass fragments. Radiocarbon ages of 3400 ± 70 and 3670 + 50 BP are reported for
these probable hearths, placing occupation during the middle Archaic. A
stratigraphic profile was sampled for pollen off-site to provide control for
interpreting the on-site sarrples and provide paleoenvironmental information. A
stratigraphic pollen column was also sampled within the buried semi-subterranean
structure, to provide specific information concerning utilization of the
structure, and additional paleoenvironmental information. Pollen sarrples were
also collected from the southwest corners of excavation units within or
immediately adjacent to the buried semi-subterranean structure. These samples
were examined to provide evidence of plants that may have been processed within
the structure.
