Mycobacterium bovis BCG Tokyo-172-1 has been used as vaccine strain in Thailand. This vaccine strain is not genetically homogenous, comprising two subpopulations (type I and II) with distinct phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. BCG Tokyo 172-1 type I and type II were subcultured and purified as a single type, and whole genome analysis of each type has been conducted in this study.
