A process for controlling sodium and sulfur levels in a pulp mill is disclosed， comprising: a) providing a pulp stream comprising sulfur and having a total alkali concentration of at least 2 Molar; b) supplying a portion of said cellulose pulp flow to a bioreactor comprising sulfur oxidizing bacteria and removing the sulphide from said pulp by oxidizing the sulfur to elemental sulfur by means of oxidizing bacteria， c) extracting the flow of treated cellulose pulp from the reactor which comprises elemental sulfur.
