Gene expression analysis of CD138-depleted bone marrow cells from patients with SMM, patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and patients with symptomatic MM was performed by using Nanostring Technology The aim of the study was to characterize the smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) bone marrow microenvironment using the nanoString nCounter gene expression system, to better understand the role of immune surveillance in disease progression and to identify immune biomarkers associated with progression to symptomatic disease and potential therapeutic targets.
