VPRS 19108 Nursing Training Records including Graduate Register, State Registered Nurses

This series comprises the nurse training, student records and graduate registers of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) (VA 1048). The first formal teaching program for nurses at the RMH was established in 1890. This comprised a two year course which increased to three years in 1897. From 1912-1923 the course was four years in length, but was reduced to three years in accordance with the 1923 State Nurses’ Registration Act. The Preliminary Training School was established in 1927, giving students a program of lectures before further training was undertaken on the wards. From 1950-1960 the RMH’s nurse training was conducted as part of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Associated Hospitals School of Nursing (VA 5263). In September 1993, the last basic nurse training students graduated from the RMH’s School of Nursing following the move from hospital-based nurse training to university-based nursing education, although post-basic courses in advanced nursing and various short courses are still taught at the hospital. Records in this series include: Registers of Graduates and Training Registers.  Information in these registers includes: name; date of birth; religion; photograph of the nurse trainee; next of kin contact details; physical description (height, weight, hair, eye and complexion colour, and I.Q.); date of signing of training agreement; prizes awarded; total periods spent in various hospitals; dates of first and final professional examinations; exact dates spent at various hospitals and their specific wards; periods of holiday and sick leave; dates commenced and completed various subjects; and exam results. Also in this series are Registers of the Supervising Sisters assessments of the student nurses work. These are based on a list of criteria which appears at the front of some of the volumes.
