The molecular weight or size of organic molecules can affect their biological or chemical reactivity in natural systems. This research investigates how vegetation and the flow of streams and rivers can dictate the molecular weight of organic matter in water bodies in the High Arctic. Results from the 2019 field season will be used to design future experiments investigating the molecular weight of organic matter and its interactions with light, microbes and metals. Rivers and headwater catchments were sampled weekly to investigate spatial and temporal controls on the particle size of dissolved organic matter. Analysis of dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen will be used to design future experimental work investigating relationships between DOM particle size, lability and associations with trace metals.
