Introduction: Understanding the knowledge and perceptions about risk factors associated with infertility is a fundamental initial measure in ensuring the preservation of fertility in the future. While there have been numerous studies investigating the knowledge of infertility among university students concerning individual genders, there is a lack of research exploring both genders within a single study. The primary aim of this research is to examine the knowledge and perceptions of university-aged individuals, both male and female, about the many risk factors associated with infertility. The study additionally identified risk factors for infertility in both males and females. Methods: A series of semi-structured interviews was conducted at the University of Ghana, involving a sample of 21 male and 18 female students. Subsequently, qualitative data analysis was performed to uncover key themes. Results: The results of the study indicate that the participants were familiar with infertility and could identify sex-specific risk factors, but they argued that infertility was a disease exclusive to women. The study additionally shows that the excessive use of contraceptives and abortion are risk factors associated with infertility in women, whereas the abuse of illicit substances and engagement in multiple sexual partnerships are risk factors related to infertility in males. Conclusion: The study highlights infertility as a critical public health issue, recommending that public universities integrate reproductive health education into their curriculum and organize seminars to enhance student awareness.
