A pharmacological comparison of Russell’s viper venoms across geographical regions and exploration of treatment strategies

Russell’s vipers are venomous snakes found across Asia, with venom composition varying across geographical regions. This leads to different symptoms in humans after a bite and alters the antivenom effectiveness. However, our research shows that antivenoms from one country may still work against venoms from another country, making them an important treatment strategy in countries without a local antivenom. Additionally, combining antivenom with a drug that inhibits toxicity of key toxins, can help to reverse venom-induced paralysis. This research will aid in the management of people bitten by Russell’s vipers and hopefully reduce death or permanent damage due to venom.
