Species-level host association reference compiled from EPPO, Scolytinae host databases, and Global Biotic Interactions

This dataset is a compiled species-level host association reference developed to support host-based scoring in the `rapidRiskAnalysis` R package. The dataset combines host association evidence from three sources: - the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO); - curated Scolytinae host databases; and - Global Biotic Interactions (GloBI). Host records from each source were cleaned and transformed into a common structure. The resulting dataset contains one row per unique associate–host pair and retains fields indicating which source or sources support each relationship. For EPPO, host relationships classified as Host, Major host, Wild/Weed, Alternate, Experimental, or Doubtful host were retained. Records classified as Non-host were excluded. EPPO taxonomic data were used to restrict records to taxa classified as species. This includes species-level records identified only to an unspecified species within a genus, such as names ending in “sp.” For the curated Scolytinae databases, only records with an identified host species were retained. Taxonomic authorities were removed from Scolytinae pest and host names for matching purposes by retaining the genus and specific epithet. For example, “Coriacephilus coriaceus (Eichhoff, 1878)” was standardized to “Coriacephilus coriaceus.” This improves matching with names used by EPPO and GloBI. For GloBI, only interactions in which both the associate and host were classified at the species level were retained. Potential host relationships were identified from selected GloBI interaction types, including parasite, pathogen, parasitoid, reservoir-host, mycorrhizal, epiphytic, and general host associations. Interaction direction was interpreted using the GloBI source and target roles so that a standardized associate name and host name could be assigned. These classifications should be interpreted as reproducible interaction-type mappings rather than individually reviewed biological determinations. Repeated records were consolidated so that each associate–host pair occurs once in the final reference dataset. Source-specific evidence, relationship types, association classes, and references were combined within each pair. Logical evidence fields indicate whether a relationship was supported by EPPO, a Scolytinae host database, GloBI, or multiple sources. The reference dataset is intended to support the calculation of Host Availability and Polyphagy components in rapid pest risk analysis. It should be interpreted as a compiled host-association reference rather than a definitive or exhaustive list of biologically confirmed hosts. Taxonomic names, source classifications, and interaction interpretations may be updated in future versions as additional curation and subject-matter expert review are completed.
