Comparative studies on sex chromosomes in cartilaginous fishes

Sex chromosome evolution has been investigated across a variety of animal lineages, which highlighted the generality of sex chromosome degeneration and subsequent dosage compensation. Despite such efforts, sex chromosomes of cartilaginous fishes remain largely unexplored until recently. To untangle the evolutionary history and molecular basis of sex determination in cartilaginous fishes, we resorted to the genomic information as well as embryonic materials from egg-laying shark species with high fecundity.
