The process relies on the metabolic activity and synergistic interactions that occur between sulphate-reducing (SRB) and sulphide-oxidising (SOB) bacterial communities which established within discrete oxic and anoxic microenvironments within the hybrid LFCR. For large-scale implementation, the consideration of key operating parameters on process performance is critical during which seasonal temperatures are expected to fluctuate, impacting biological sulphate reduction (BSR) and partial sulphide oxidation. Here, three laboratory-scaled hybrid LFCR units were subjected to changes in operating temperature to evaluate its impact on process performance and microbial community succession.
