The unit stand volume was varied with habitat, tree species, stand age and silviculture management. And the selection of tree species for man-made stand will be concern for the carbon sequestration. It is used to access the carbon storage on the unit forest stand according to the woody biomass by the carbon amount of dry mass while IPCC suggested the ratio of 0.5 for the carbon amount of dry mass. The carbon content analyzed on the tree species for the planting projects in Taiwan on 0.47-0.49 make little difference among the species but the specific gravity is varied among the species from 0.302 to 0.687. Even on the same rotation of different tree species the carbon sequestrate ability also varied. We expect to select tree species on both the high ability of growth and carbon sequestration through the evaluation of timber specific gravity and carbon content. And the selected species may enable to enhance the carbon storage on unit stand. We classify 3 categories which coastal stands, plain stands and secondary forest below 500m elevation for 3 years study in separate. The stand yearly growth and biomass will census and the selected tree with different species will sampled to determine the wood specific gravity and carbon content. Through the evaluation we could estimate the carbon sequestrate ability of the species and select the high growth, high specific gravity and high carbon content species for future planting reference.
