NRS-4547 | Miscellaneous correspondence with officials and private persons

This series consists of bundles of correspondence from private citizens, and officials seeking assistance or intervention in, political or administrative processes by the Governor. Most of the correspondence from private individuals, was of a largely vexatious nature, or conveyed opinions on topics such as religion, politics, and the McLeod-Lindsay Murder trial. Some of the correspondence has been answered by the Official Secretary to the Governor while other letters were forwarded to the relevant Departments. The more vexatious correspondence appears not to have received a response. These bundles mainly contain files which were arranged alphabetically from 1937 to 1947, and chronologically from 1951 to 1952. The correspondence was arranged chronologically within the files, and some of the correspondence has been registered with an annual single number. From 1954, the bundles contain correspondence which was arranged chronologically. This series also contains a bundle of correspondence, dating from 1899 to 1955, which largely consists of copies of despatches to the Secretary of State, and from other Governors and correspondence with officials on a variety of subjects such as: the Commonwealth Powers (War) Act 1916; correspondence relating to the old seal of the Government of Norfolk Island; the granting of a coat-of-arms to New South Wales (1906); and a message of support from the Greek community of Sydney to the Allies in 1915. The bundle, which is also included in NRS 4541, appears to form part of this series as it contains correspondence from private citizens seeking assistance and expressing opinions to the Governor. The correspondence in this bundle was arranged chronologically. Some of the correspondence has been registered with an annual single number.
