After achieving independence—which occurred at a rapid pace after the Second World War—the former colonies of questioned the continued use of the English language. Despite of many positive qualities in the continued use of English, all is not rosy with its global dominance in the world today. One of the criticisms leveled against global English is that it is guilty of cultural imperialism, as it tends to sideline other languages. At the same time however, cultural imperialism may not be entirely American, nor, is it wholly linguistic. Another manifestation of cultural imperialism occurs when literature in English causes a decline in the other literatures or edges them out by diverting attention away from them especially in relation to the sidelining of oral literature in native languages.
