资源简介:
Iron is an essential nutrient for mammals and involved in multiple redox reactions essential for the survival. Currently, it is unclear whether the gut microbiome is involved in iron homeostasis or whether dietary iron levels influences microbiome composition and function. In this study, we induced anemia by feeding conventional C57Bl/6 mice a purified diet containing a very low level of iron (~4 parts per million) and found the composition of the gut microbiome to change dramatically during anemia. When inorganic iron was reintroduced into the diet some bacteria are unable to recover from an anemic whereas populations recover. These studies provide a new model of anemia-induced microbiome perturbation and add to the growing understanding of mammalian iron pools and cycling.
