Carved by the sculpture Praxiteles in the fourth Century B.C. from fine marble, the original sculpture, which is no longer extant, enjoyed great reknown as the first devotional statue of a female goddess in the nude. After causing an immediate sensation when it was installed in a sacred precint on the island of Knidos, it inspired many re-creations over the succeding centuries.
