Essays on the economic determinants of health and healthcare utilisation in Indonesia

This thesis examines the determinants of health and healthcare utilisation in Indonesia amidst a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It finds that women with access to more new primary schools during childhood are more likely to be overweight but less prone to smoking later in life. On mental health, it identifies that less than 10% of individuals with probable depression use mental healthcare, with socioeconomic status and insurance predicting access. Finally, a sudden loss of health insurance coverage appears to reduce young adults’ usage of formal healthcare services while increasing their use of self-medication and traditional healers.
