„Personal distress“- Das Sorgenkind der Empathiemessung „Personal distress“- The problem child within the empathy measure

Personal Distress (PD) als Teilkomponente der Empathie ist der wohl umstrittenste Faktor neben empathic concern, perspective taking und der fantasy scale in diesem Konzept. Obwohl der Einfluss von PD in vielen theoretischen Kontexten (Altruismus, Aggression, Berufswahl) empirisch gut belegt ist, fallen psychometrische Analysen der Items zu PD in allen Studien eher mäßig bis schlecht aus; bei der Bildung eines Empathiescores wird PD gar nicht erst berücksichtigt (Paulus, 2012). In diesem Artikel wird die Rolle der PD-Skala diskutiert und in verschiedene theoretische Kontexte eingeordnet. Personal Distress (PD) as a part of the empathy model is the probably most controversially discussed factor beside empathic concern, perspective taking and the fantasy scale. Although the influence of PD in many theoretical contexts (altruism, aggression, choice of career) is empirically well explored, psychometrical analyses show rather moderately to badly results in almost all studies; by the construction of an empathy score the PD-scale is not considered at all (Paulus, in 2012). In this article the role of the PD-scale is discussed in different theoretical contexts.
