Sequencing and comparative genomics of smut fungi Pseudozyma antarctica ATCC34888. Pseudozyma antarctica ATCC34888

The haploid basidiomycetous yeast Pseudozyma atarctica is related to the plant pathogen Ustilago maydis, the cause of smut disease in corn. Many of the effector genes detected in U. maydis are conserved in P. antarctica, but so far no mating partner has been identified for P. antarctica which would allow to test its potential to colonize grasses. P. antarctica is mostly used as producer of extracellular enzymes and secondary metabolites for industrial applications. The haploid strain ATCC34888 was obtained from the American Type Culture Collection and was sequenced by PacBio.
