Large street trees in San Francisco Bay Area 2005 - 2022

This dataset includes large urban street trees detected in National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial imagery from 2005 to 2022 across approximately 1,100 cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Using deep learning algorithms, we identified trees with canopy diameters greater than seven meters, a size threshold that highlights their importance for providing critical ecosystem services, such as improved air quality, urban cooling, and enhanced mental well-being. The dataset enables spatiotemporal analyses of tree canopy change at neighborhood, city, and county levels over an 18-year period, revealing patterns and disparities in access to urban greenery. These data support research on environmental justice, urban planning, and the role of green infrastructure in rapidly urbanizing regions.
