English subtitles of the interview with the former dyer GDS – 1

The former dyer GDS tells how the activity of dyeing was introduced to Guene by Kpete, the founder of the village, who was originally from Mali. His narrative is in part a description of the dyeing chain of operations, as suposedly delivered by Kpete to the first inhabitants of the village. GDS then describes at length the relationship between dyers and weavers, the latter being linked to the dyers through matrimonial exchanges at the time of Kpete. In the last part of the interview, he describes the methods used to give yarns a blue or black colour, as well as the manufacture of a red dye based on the bark of an unidentified tree, which is boiled to obtain a solution called bauri.
