The data originate from four old-growth forest sites: Boubín (BB), Eustaška (EU), Ranšpurk (RN), and Žofín (ZF). Data structure /Dendrometer_data Dendrometer measurements for all trees included in the study. Tape_value – Absolute value of radial increment (band dendrometers) or DBH (point dendrometers). DBH_value – Continuous tree diameter at breast height (DBH). Tape_increment – Change in tree radial size (band dendrometers) or DBH (point dendrometers). DBH_increment – DBH increment. Normalized_growth – Annual growth normalized to a 0–1 scale. Normalized_zero_growth – Annual growth normalized to a 0–1 scale, calculated using the zero-growth approach (excluding stem shrinkage). DBH_zero_growth – DBH calculated using the zero-growth approach (excluding stem shrinkage). Normalized_increment – Increment calculated from normalized growth. Normalized_zero_increment – Increment calculated from normalized zero growth. DBH_zero_increment – DBH increment calculated from DBH zero growth. twd_normalized – Tree water deficit calculated from normalized growth. twd_DBH – Tree water deficit calculated from DBH. GrowthPhase – Tree growth status: growth, tree water deficit (TWD), stem tissue refilling, or no change (see Kašpar et al. 2024, New Phytologist, https://doi.org/10.1111/nph.19852, or the study supported by this dataset for details). DayPhase – Day phase defined by the position of the Sun above the horizon (see Kašpar et al. 2024, New Phytologist, https://doi.org/10.1111/nph.19852, or the study supported by this dataset for details). /Evaluated_hemispheric_photos Percentage of open canopy above the apex of understory trees included in the study. /Meteo_station_data Under-canopy meteorological data including air temperature (T), relative air humidity (H), global solar radiation (R), and precipitation totals, recorded for all relevant combinations of Year × DOY × Hour during measurement periods. /Meteo_understory_data Under-canopy air temperature (T) and relative air humidity (H) data recorded for all relevant combinations of Year × DOY × Hour during measurement periods. /SWP_data Soil water potential (SWP) measured at 10 cm below the soil surface for all relevant combinations of Year × DOY × Hour during measurement periods. /Tree_metadata Study site elevation and geographic coordinates. Tree-level metadata including diameter at breast height (DBH) for all trees included in the study at each site.
