Determination of magnetic-field-stabilised non-collinear structure in Mn3NiN thin films using neutron diffraction

Manganese antiperovskites with formula Mn3AN (A = Sn, Ni, Ga…) have attracted attention recently due to the large range of intrinsic electrical, thermal and magnetic properties they display. The origin of these unusual properties is their frustrated non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure. We have recently developed highly coherent thin films of Mn3NiN that display bulk-like properties, but unexpectedly show a sign-change in their anomalous Hall effect on cooling, accompanied by a sudden change in the anisotropy. Here we propose to investigate this region using WISH to determine the magnetic structure that causes this change of properties. The results will enhance our understanding of the physics governing the non-collinear ordering, and inform future spintronic device design.
