Genetic changes of Vero cells under simulated-microgravity conditions

We examined the genetical changes in Vero cells in a simulated microgravity environment. We cultured the cells in a 3D clinostat, which has been demonstrated to replicate the effects of microgravity environments. In simulated microgravity conditions, we found that Vero cells formed multicellular spheroids (MCSs), and the proliferation of Vero cells was enhanced under the simulated microgravity conditions. Interestingly, while electron microscopy observation revealed widening gaps between cells, clear evidence of gene expressions promoting cell proliferation was not obtained through gene expression analysis.People who spend extended periods in a microgravity environment are believed to be at increased risk of opportunistic infections, such as herpes viruses. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of conducting more detailed investigations into pathogens under microgravity.
