VPRS 8194 Registration Cards for General Correspondence Files, Single Number System, Port and Harbours Branch

This series consists of combined file registration and movement cards which were part of a single number filing system for general correspondence and a separate set of cards for property files maintained by the Ports and Harbours Branch/Division of the Public Works Department. They appear to have initially belonged to a wider Departmental correspondence filing system. The cards control VPRS 8193.Upon the basis of the dates of the files themselves the registration cards are understood to date from circa 1963 to 1986. They are arranged in numerical order according to the sequential file numbers. As it is evident that the cards initially (it seems up to the 166000's) were removed from a larger Departmental filing system the sequence of cards extant is therefore not complete.On the facing side the cards record: the file number; the location (if appropriate); the subject or title of the file; the origin (i.e., previous file numbers if top-numbered); and the letter of the alphabet under which the file had been indexed (see VPRS 8189 for the Indexes). The reverse side of the card recorded the file movements.The single number filing system to which these cards belonged ceased in 1986 when the Ports and Harbours Division was integrated with the three Port Authorities at Melbourne, Geelong and Portland. The cards were evidently sorted and disposed of in a similar way to the files (see Descriptive Note for VPRS 8193 for a full explanation).The P1 consignment of this series comprises cards for both the archived and non-archived files which were maintained at the Port of Melbourne Authority from 1986. The range of control symbols is from 4371-395493.
