An apparatus for controlling the rate of flow of fluid mold material comprising: a manifold (24)， a valve pin (31) being slidably mounted for reciprocal upstream and downstream linear movement along a pin axis (X) such that a downstream end of the valve pin (31) is drivable into and out of open and closed positions relative to a gate (20)， an electric actuator (66) comprising an electric motor comprised of a motor housing (64) that houses a drive shaft (60) having a drive gear (191) and a drive axis (Y)， a transmission (58a) comprised of a gear shaft， the drive gear (191) and the transmission gear (72， 190， 195， 197) being drivably interconnected and arranged such that the drive axis (Y) and the gear axis (X) are non-coaxially mounted or disposed relative to each other.
