For the first time on the basis of scientifically defined criteria, the information map Schutzwald presents the potential protection forest backdrop in the entire Austrian territory and is intended to increase awareness of the “green” protection infrastructure. As an important planning tool, it not only serves the integral management of natural hazards, but is specifically intended to draw attention to the potential site and property protection forests in forest management. The evaluated map combines a clearly defined scientific methodology with local knowledge and local practice expertise in the field. The map visualises the protective function of the forest, i.e. a potential forest area designed to protect against natural hazards or soil degradation. The illustrated categories do not give rise to any legal obligation. In a 3-year interval, the BML queried a possible need for change from the regional forestry authorities.
