This study systematically investigated the controlling factors of brGDGTs distribution in modern lakes across the mid-latitudes of Asia. By integrating with other globally published lake datasets, this study uncovered two key findings: 1. The isomerization of brGDGTs (represented by the IR6+7ME index) is governed by salinity, and can function as a novel salinity proxy. 2. Salinity-induced brGDGT isomerization will elevate the values of the MBT' 5ME paleotemperature proxy, thereby leading to overestimation of past temperatures. Accordingly, researchers further calibrated the relationship between MBT' 5ME and lake water temperature using brGDGT isomerization to remove the confounding effect of salinity, and developed a new method applicable to quantitative reconstruction of lake temperatures. This dataset compiles the relative abundances of 17 bacterial tetraether membrane lipid compounds from surface lake sediment samples across the globe, along with the proxy values derived from these measurements. A total of 195 sampling sites/data points are included in this dataset.
