Soil analysis
The product includes results from analyses, mainly grain size analyses, carried out within SGU's soil mapping. In some cases, the soil content of organic matter and/or lime is also reported. In some cases other parameters have also been analysed (e.g. pH, base mineral index and magnetite content). The grain size distribution of soils is crucial for a number of important properties (e.g. water retention, permeability and erosion propensity). This product can be used in conjunction with SGU soil maps to illustrate the grain size distribution of soil species in a given region. To some extent, data can also be used to estimate other soil characteristics, such as the proportion of easily weathered minerals (e.g. calcite). In the descriptions of the soil maps, it is possible to read more about the characteristics and formation methods of soil species in specific areas. Grain size data are reported according to the nomenclature established by the Swedish Geotechnical Association (SGF 1981). This also applies to the samples originally classified according to the Atterberg nomenclature, which was used by the SGU until 1996.
