Thousands of years ago, people began to change the landscape: They cleared land, thawed streams, drained bogs, planted trees, erected dykes, fertilised meadows, or built settlements, roads and rails. Due to the respective usage, the landscape character also changed over the course of the story.

The landscapes shaped, shaped or influenced by humans are called cultural landscapes.
The Hamburg Metropolitan Region is characterised by different cultural landscapes. The best known examples of this are the Lüneburg Heath and the Old Land.
