Death of St. Mary of Egypt

This relief depict, as the name would suggest, the death of St. Mary of Egypt, or Maria Aegyptiaca. She lived a sinful life, driven by irresistible lust, but eventually realised her impurity is stopping her from entering the church and living a decent life. After asking Virgin Mary for forgiveness, she crossed the Jordan and lived the rest of her life in the desert as a hermit.正如其名所示，这件浮雕描绘的是埃及圣玛丽（St. Mary of Egypt，亦作Maria Aegyptiaca）的离世场景。她曾受难以克制的情欲驱使，过着堕落的生活，但最终意识到自身的不洁令她无法进入教堂、过上正派的生活。在向圣母玛利亚（Virgin Mary）祈求宽恕后，她渡过约旦河，余生皆在沙漠中以隐士身份修行度日。
