Radar Climatology of Severe Storms in Australia

Severe storms which produce hail and damaging winds are responsible for property damage, loss of life and a major contributor to insurance costs. This project will utilise archived radar data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to construct spatial maps of severe storms in Australia and construct a climatology of their modes of occurrence and diurnal cycle. This work will have applications in climate modelling as it will provide observations with which they can be validated. It will also have applications to the insurance industry to assist with insurance premium costing.

引发冰雹与破坏性大风的强风暴，会造成财产损失、人员伤亡，同时也是推高保险成本的主要诱因之一。本项目将依托澳大利亚气象局（Australian Bureau of Meteorology）的存档雷达数据，绘制澳大利亚境内强风暴的空间分布图谱，并建立其发生模态与日变化周期的气候学统计特征。该研究成果可应用于气候模拟领域，能够提供可供模型验证的观测数据，支撑气候模型的校验工作。同时还可服务于保险行业，辅助开展保险保费的定价与核算工作。
