The new land cover map for 2020 — LAND COVER RAVA 2020 was created from satellite data from the Sentinel-2 missions (multispectral optics) and Sentinel-1 SAR as part of the European Copernicus space programme. The data acquired from these missions were appropriately calibrated and subjected to a machine learning process through supervised classifications (K-Nearest Neighbours -kNN and Minimum Distance according to a hierarchical approach) to map the different components that insist on the territory by expanding the guidelines provided at European level. The methodology developed has been published in scientific literature and has been approved by ISPRA at national level. In addition to these data, satellite data from Google’s Planet company was used, while for the definition of the training set and validation set using field data appropriately collected with GNSS.The satellite data processed and all the bands were re-ampled bilinearly to 10 m except those with a nominal spatial resolution native to 10 m in this regard, please refer to the technical documentation available on the website of the European Space Agency (ESA). It is also recalled that the DTM of the Valle d’Aosta Autonomous Region at 10 m and other derived products for the purpose of refining some classes of the paper was also included in the stack of input data for classification.
