Rare earth elements and yttrium (REE and Y, termed REY) are essential chemical elements for cutting-edge technologies and geochemical proxies in geology and marine science. Recently, marine phosphorites have aroused high research interest as a potential resource for heavy REE and Y, however, the REY host mineral species and the REY distribution among them are unknown. We propose to address these questions by coupling nano-scale X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results will be completed with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements and atomistic calculations to model the enrichment mechanism of REY in marine deposits. This research is supported by an ERC Advanced Grant (DEEP-SEE) and is the main part of a post-doctoral researcher.
