5.6.1. Olivetti Faces Dataset
This dataset consists of a collection of facial images captured at AT&T Cambridge Laboratories between April 1992 and April 1994. The sklearn.datasets.fetch_olivetti_faces function is a data fetching and caching function that downloads the data archive from AT&T.

Ten distinct images are provided for each of the 40 unique subjects. For some subjects, the images were taken at different times, with variations in lighting, facial expressions (open/closed eyes, smiling/non-smiling), and facial features (with or without glasses). All images were captured against a uniform dark background, with subjects in an upright frontal pose, allowing for some sideways movement.
