Three midden samples from arbitrary 10-centimeter levels in a column at shell mound site CA-SMA-151 in San Mateo County, coastal California, were examined for macrofloral remains. The lowest level of the column stopped at the level above a human burial. The site is within the Coastanoan/Ohlone ethnographic area, and similar sites in the area have been dated to the Late Period, about 1200-1300 A.D. Conventional radiocarbon ages of 1090 ± 40 BP and 920 ± 40 BP were obtained on mussel shell from CA-SMA-151. Macrofloral analysis is used to provide information concerning plant resources utilized by the occupants of this site.
