Psychosocial Factors Shaping the Mental Health of Caregivers of Intellectually Disabled Children

This study employed a qualitative, exploratory research design to gain an in-depth understanding of the psychosocial factors affecting the mental health of parents caring for children with intellectual disabilities. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from purposively selected participants who were primary caregivers of children diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. The interviews allowed for open expression of lived experiences and were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis guided by Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. This approach enabled the identification of key themes related to emotional, social, and psychological challenges, as well as coping strategies adopted by the participants. Additionally, the study aimed to provide recommendations for enhancing services and support systems for these parents.
