The Mantodea of Carl Peter Thunberg

Abstract. A brief biography of Thunberg is presented with an analysis of the antiquated taxonomic convention of “alpha” and “beta” varieties. Each species described by Thunberg in his 1784 and 1815 works is reviewed. The original voucher specimens used by Thunberg were located within his personal collection, now housed at the Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University. These specimens were photographed and compared to their published descriptions. Historical literature following Thunberg’s publications was assessed for taxonomic accuracy.摘要：本文简述了通贝里（Thunberg）的生平，并对其提出的"α变种"与"β变种"这一过时的分类学惯例进行了分析。本文逐一梳理了通贝里在1784年与1815年的著作中所记载的所有物种。通贝里所使用的原始凭证标本（voucher specimen）被发现留存于其个人收藏中，目前该收藏由乌普萨拉大学进化博物馆（Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University）保管。研究人员对这些标本进行了拍摄，并将其与已发表的物种描述进行了比对。此外，本文还对通贝里发表著作之后的相关历史文献的分类学准确性进行了评估。
