Zetaproteobacteria, a class of marine neutrophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB), have recently begun to be recognized in coastal environments. Here we present the isolation and genomic analysis of two coastal Zetaproteobacteria, Mariprofundus micogutta strains CP-5 and CP-8. Isolated from the oxic-anoxic transition zone of the Chesapeake Bay during seasonal stratification, these two chemolithoautotrophs produce bundles of iron-oxide dread structures, and are novel for their planktonic lifestyle.
