Runoff is a physical phenomenon of unorganised water flow into a watershed following rainfall. It lasts until it meets a river, a sewerage system or a marsh. Runoff can have several origins: natural storm runoff, natural snow runoff and anthropogenic runoff; all or only one of these origins can produce “major flood risk” runoff. The strength of runoff depends on a combination of multiple factors: the intensity of precipitation, the value of the slope, the density of the vegetation cover, etc., and especially human activities.
