This is the dataset (raw input data, computing scripts, processed data, resulting figures) underlying the publication "Bimodality in subaqueous dune height suggests flickering behavior at high flow" (de Lange et al. 2025, Nature Communications). This publication describes how bedforms in sand-bedded rivers exhibit large variability in bedform size, when water flow strength increases. These observations are based on 1) reanalysis of experimental flume data from the previously published studies by Venditti et al. (2016, DOI: 10.1111/sed.12247) and Bradley & Venditti (2019, DOI: 10.1029/2018JF004832), and 2) analysis of experimental flume data from a new experiment we performed ourselves. Both the data from the two previous flume studies and from our own flume experiment consist of sand bed elevation measurements, measured as a function of space within the laboratory (flume) setup, and for a duration of several hours of flume run time. The computing scripts analyze these datasets, to derive river dune heights and lengths as a function of water flow strength and flume run time. These results form the basis for our publication (de Lange et al. 2025).
