资源简介:
Coring of Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments has long been the basis of many projects funded by the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. Over the past 50 years, more than 50 cores have been obtained, and accompanying geologic field notes (lithologic logs) and photographs were made by various geologists at the time of coring. These lithologic logs and photographs provide a record of Atlantic Coastal Plain sedimentation that can be used by researchers mapping of stratigraphic changes across regions, geohydrologists tracing aquifer and aquiclude extent across state boundaries, climate modelers interested in relative sea level changes, and much more. These data form the basis for any geological research that is conducted on USGS cored material, either by USGS personnel or by outside entities such as state geological surveys and/or academic universities. Unfortunately, only a few of the many cores drilled in the Atlantic Coastal Plain have accompanying published lithologic logs and photographs. Compilation and publication of this data provides a means for stratigraphic reconciliation across state boundaries and benefits stake holders by allowing for easy access of these preliminary datasets. Preservation, cataloguing, and archiving of these geological materials allows for future access to these data. Digital copies of hand-written lithologic logs, representing the first on-site analysis of cored material, are provided for each core. Photographs, negatives, and slides of material taken immediately after coring have been converted to digital format. In some cases, there are gaps in the photographic record due to loss of original photographs. A table of related external resources, typically published articles, is also provided for each core.
