The Units of Study Scheme was introduced about 1970, to enable teachers to qualify for improved status, by submitting essay projects. It was offered as an alternative, where teachers were unable to undertake full or part-time study at a College. Generally, those making use of the scheme were attempting to increase their status, from a two year trained teacher to that of a three year trained teacher. The scheme was used mainly by teachers, who had the equivalent of two years of training, from ex-Voluntary Association Schools, which were usually for the handicapped. These schools were being progressively taken over by the Education Department, and the teachers were then employed by the State. By 1979 the Scheme was winding down in 1978 there were only between five and six essays submitted to the Division. Not all essays were retained by the Department as some were claimed by the teachers who submitted them. The essays are arranged alphabetically by the name of the teacher submitting each essay.
