THE PROBLEM OF SUBSTANTIVATION OF ENGLISH ADJECTIVES

The article examines the problem of substantivation of English adjectives as a complex process situated between morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse. Substantivation is interpreted as the use of an adjective in a nominal function, either through full conversion into a noun or through partial nominal use in noun phrases such as the rich, the unemployed, the elderly and the unknown. The article analyzes the grammatical status of substantivized adjectives, their semantic classes, syntactic behavior, article usage, number interpretation and stylistic functions.本文探讨了英语形容词的名物化（substantivation）问题，将其视为介于形态学（morphology）、句法学（syntax）、语义学（semantics）与话语学（discourse）之间的复杂过程。 本研究将名物化解释为形容词以名词性功能的使用方式：既可以通过完全转化为名词实现，也可以在名词短语中实现部分名词性用法，例如the rich（富人）、the unemployed（失业者）、the elderly（老年人）与the unknown（未知群体）。 本文还分析了名物化形容词的语法地位、语义类别、句法行为、冠词使用规则、数的阐释及其文体功能。
