The government identifies so-called nutrient-contaminated areas (NV areas) where agricultural companies need to take additional steps to improve water quality. This obligation follows from the European Commission’s derogation decision. This decision allows farmers to spread extra manure for a few more years, provided that vulnerable (water) areas reach a healthy level more quickly. The designation started on 1 January 2024.
