Resident Perceptions of Flood Risk, Civic Responsibility, and Community Action: Pre-Intervention Survey Dataset

This dataset contains responses from an exploratory survey conducted with residents of a flood-prone neighbourhood in South Stanley, County Durham, prior to the implementation of sustainable flood mitigation interventions (bund construction and meadow planting). The survey aimed to capture residents’ perceptions of environmental risk, civic responsibility, and the role of community action in flood preparedness and response.The survey comprised 18 items, combining closed- and open-ended questions, and collected data on demographics, proximity to the intervention site, awareness of flood risk and NbS/SuDS infrastructure, experiences of flooding, attitudes toward environmental care, connection to local green space, and willingness to volunteer. Recruitment was undertaken through postal leaflets distributed to 150 households near the intervention site, as well as outreach via the Wear Rivers Trusts' local Facebook group. A total of 140 valid responses were retained after data cleaning.This dataset provides flood insights into community awareness, responsibilities, and attitudes towards nature-based solutions and civic participation in the context of flood resilience. It offers a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in environmental risk perception, citizen engagement, and sustainable urban interventions.
