Carbamazepine effects vision in early life stage zebrafish

There is a global increase in the consumption of pharmaceuticals, which often find their way into aquatic systems through wastewater treatment plant discharge. Among these, carbamazepine is the most frequently detected pharmaceutical in river water samples worldwide. The toxic effects of carbamazepine to early life stage aquatic organisms is not well characterized, particularly following exposure scenarios at concentrations measured in the environment. Early life stage zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to a range of concentrations found in the environment and transcriptomic profiling was conducted on larvae from 48 hours post fertilization (hpf) to 144 hpf to assess the influence of carbamazepine on fish heath.
