BIOL2050 Lab 02. This experiment was conducted in the Danby Woodlot at York University on 22nd September 2015 between 4:00-4:38 pm with team members: Bryson Chandrarajan, Stanley Igiebor and Sharan Saravanabavan. The temperature was 22°C, clear skies with a cool breeze. Due to the canopy coverage there was very little sunlight in the Woodlot. Adult trees were chosen at random in the Danby woodlot and their DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) was measured in inches using the measuring tape, from one end of the trunk to the other, keeping the tape straight. Then saplings of the same species nearest to the adult trees were located. The distance between the sapling and the adult tree was measured using the measuring tape, from the edge of the sapling to the edge of the adult tree. Then the DBH of the saplings were recorded using the measuring tape, from one end of the trunk to the other, keeping the tape straight. The canopy coverage was estimated in percentage by forming a square with fingers and holding it up and estimating how much sky is visible. The canopy coverage percentage sometimes exceeded 100% as a result of overlapping layers of the leaves and branches.
