To explore whether Drosophila malignant tumors share a common molecular basis for their malignancy, we examined common gene expression changes associated with these tumors. We performed a complementary DNA (cDNA) microarray experiment to systematically investigate gene expression profiles of tumors derived from four different genotypes (RasV12scrib-, RasV12baz-, RasV12cdc42- and RafGOFscrib-) in comparison to those of eye-antennal discs containing wild-type clones. Large Drosophila malignant tumors were induced from clones of cells in the larval eye-antenna imaginal discs by defined genetic mutations (RasV12scrib-, RasV12baz-, RasV12cdc42- and RafGOFscrib-). Tumors and wild-type controls from 3rd instar larvae were collected for RNA extraction and hybridization on customized microarrays. Biological replicates: 4 replicates per genotype.
