Plasticity in treefrog calling behavior driven by mutual-assessment of their own body size and perception of rivals' competitive status

In anurans the advertisement call is primarily associated with reproduction, as males use it to attract potential mates. It also plays a key role in regulating male-male agonistic interactions. Through this call, males can assess the physical traits of neighboring males, maintain spacing between males, and mediate aggressive interactions. Here, we tested whether the Brazilian treefrog Boana albomarginata males alter their calling behavior in response to the simulated arrival of males with different perceived competitive potential through a playback experiment. Here, you will find two files: (1) the dataset used to evaluate natural variation in advertisement calls and to create the acoustic stimuli; and (2) the dataset containing the raw data obtained in the playback experiment.
